Children's Music Journey

Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Children's Music Journey seems like fun. Is it a game? The single greatest impact of Children's Music Journey is what is gained from the interactive lessons, and the interactive practice rooms. Children's Music Journey satisfies the majority of instructional objectives for the "making music" portion of elementary school music curriculums. The games, library, and improvisation room are included to increase the 'engaged' time spent in key learning areas.
  2. Who should use Children's Music Journey? Children's Music Journey is for every beginner, whether they're taking lessons or not. The development of the lessons in Children's Music Journey is targeted for young users, ages 4-8. Everything is animated and narrated, so older users may find the pace somewhat easy. All ages seem to find it very attractive software, and an enjoyable way to learn the fundamentals of music.
  3. Where is Children's Music Journey Being Used? Children's Music Journey is currently being used in homes across North America and the United Kingdom. Children's Music Journey is also being widely adopted for use in elementary schools computer labs across North America. UCLA's Department of Education is following three public elementary school Children's Music Journey programs in southern California in an outcomes based study. This study is focusing on the many benefits of music.
  4. What do you need to Run Children's Music Journey? You need a Windows or Macintosh OSX computer with 128 Meg RAM, 250 megabytes of hard drive space, a CD-ROM drive, 300MHz CPU or greater, and a sound card that synthesizes MIDI instruments. The student should ideally have a keyboard connected to the computer. We recommend a 49-key, full-sized, velocity sensitive keyboard, as in the M-Audio keyboard featured on this site.
  5. Will Children's Music Journey actually teach my child to play the piano?Yes. The purpose of Children's Music Journey is to achieve tangible results in several areas. By the end of the program your child will be reading music, playing with both hands, understanding important music concepts, improvising and composing. At the same time they will develop an interest in learning more about music.
  6. Is Children's Music Journey useful if your child doesn't end up playing the piano seriously?CMJ is important even if your child goes no further with the piano instrument, in fact it is important to your child's overall academic development even if they go no further in music. As an example, is was demonstrated in a study undertaken by the Hong Kong University of China, that children who participated in a challenging music program had a consistently increasing rate of learning new vocabulary. If they ceased to study music, they retained the advanced rate of learning. If they rejoined the music program, the rate increased further. This implies that the rigorous study of music, specifically a challenging program of reading music and playing at the same time, changes the brain itself, and increases one's capacity to learn from then on. This effect has been observed to be significant with respect to rates of learning math and science.
  7. If you have two children beginning to learn about music and playing the piano, which product should you purchase - Children's Music Journey, or Piano Suite Premier? Younger children may benefit from the easier pace of Children's Music Journey, from the animations, simpler games, and hand holding, created specifically for early learners. Children's Music Journey is going to seem like more fun to a young child. However, if you have to select only one product, the Piano Suite Premier is more comprehensive, lasts much longer, covers a far greater range of skill, and would allow both children to proceed with a very good chance of success. The learning engine in Piano Suite Premier does work well for younger children, and even a 5 year old can make good progress with this tool. For those with young and middle-aged children, having access to both titles would be ideal.
